Drew Bessinger was born and raised in Point Pleasant, New Jersey. Drew’s father, Frank, was a teacher and his mother, Ruth, worked on Wall Street in her youth. Drew’s father was a WW2 veteran, and was wounded and captured during the Battle of the Bulge in January 1945. Drew lost his father when he was 13 years old. Drew lettered in Football and Track at his NJ high school. With his father’s loss, college was not an option financially.
Following his graduation from high school in 1975, Drew enlisted in the United States Army. The photo above is of Drew (L) and his friend and teammate, Dan Burrell (R). Drew and Dan went through basic combat training together at Fort Dix, NJ and both received merit promotions at the end of BCT. Drew was trained as a Military Police Officer, and was assigned to Fort Dix, NJ. Dan and Drew are still close. Dan came out to California, Drew was a groomsman at his wedding in Cambria, and Dan was Drew’s best man when he married his wife Yvonne. Drew is the Godfather to Dan’s son.
In 1977, Drew was reassigned to the MP Customs unit in Heilbronn, Germany as a Customs Inspector and Investigator. Drew was honorably discharged in 1979 as a Sergeant (E5). Upon his return to the US, Drew lived outside of Washington DC and worked for the Department of Defense Police at Ft. Belvoir, VA. After moving to California in 1980, Drew was hired as a Police Officer by the Santa Barbara Police Department.
Drew moved to Clovis in 1984 and took a Police Officer position with the University Police Department at California State University-Fresno. In 1987, Drew accepted a Police Officer position with the Clovis Police Department, where he served for the next 22 years in various positions in patrol, investigations and administration assignments. Drew rose through the ranks to Corporal in 1992, Sergeant in 1997 and Captain in 2006. Drew’s assignments included SWAT, Honor Guard, Internal Affairs, Watch Commander, and Community Policing.
In both his work and private roles, Drew has been involved in dignitary protection of two Presidents, a Vice President, Speaker of the House, Secretary of State, former UK Prime Minister, and a California Governor.
In 1993, Drew wrote a nationally published article “Using the Civil Eviction Process to Rid Rental Properties of Criminals”, a how-to guide on using eviction to displace the criminal element in communities. The article was published in several national law enforcement periodicals, and is the basis for a police academy class he has taught at the State Center Regional Police Academy for over 20 years. In 2009, Drew retired from the Clovis Police Department at the rank of Police Captain.
Drew is a graduate of Fresno State with a BA in Public Administration, and holds numerous professional certifications. Drew also graduated from the prestigious Sherman Block Leadership Institute in 2002.
